About our journalism

Panos London reports on development issues that are often neglected by mainstream media. Through our global team of local journalists we seek out the views of people on the edges of society and offer you fresh perspectives.

We believe in well-researched journalism that seeks the views of people who are rarely asked for their opinions. We want to hear about the experiences of a wide range of people and aim to give priority to the perspectives of people who are poor, marginalised and have few communication channels.

We are not trying to raise money, push a line or win a campaign. But we do aim to ask hard questions and raise debate, and hope that our coverage will put some neglected issues and viewpoints on to the agenda.

As former director of Panos South Asia - now editor of Nepali Times - Kunda Dixit put it:

"We are not asking journalists to become activists and start waving the flag, but they should not be passive observers any more to the misery and deprivation around them. It will be a good journalist's commitment and professionalism that will ensure developments are covered intelligently and in-depth."

We believe that journalism can support development, simply by being good journalism. It should provide citizens with trustworthy, contextualised information, raise relevant issues, and hold governments and public bodies and processes to account. Journalism about development topics should be a good read, and should be subject to the same scrutiny as any other kind of article.

Our editors work in partnership with specialists in the global Panos Network to recruit and support journalist fellows. We commission radio and print online features from journalists based in the country on which they are reporting, who have a commitment to good journalism on development issues, and who are keen to learn to produce content for international audiences.

We provide an intensive editorial mentoring process which our journalists say they find extremely valuable. Many of the journalists we work with go on to occupy senior positions or to become subject specialists.
