Members of the Antandroy community learning to make their own video films, Faux Cap, southern Madagascar - Rose McCausland | Living Lens

‘I’m really eager: the camera is something that my ancestors never touched, now, we, their grandchildren are learning – and so it’s going to be a lesson for the small ones and for our children’s children.’

Project participant,
Faux Cap, Madagascar

The residents of the remote Faux Cap region on the southern coast of Madagascar have little opportunity to make their needs heard. Panos London worked with community members so that they could make their own videos sharing their knowledge and priorities for the future. Despite living without electricity, they quickly got to grips with filming and shot six films showing how their communities were adapting to the challenges of drought, harsh winds and encroaching sand dunes.

The films were shown to the wider community, at a music festival and at an international film festival. A special screening and discussion in the regional capital for an audience of local decision-makers led to invitations to the community to apply for government grants to put their plans into action.
